Evening Sun sunflowers

My Evening Sun sunflowers (no flowers yet though) are from seedlings that i sowed on 9/12/2010. All the seedlings germinated and i put them in 3 different pots under 3 different light and soil conditions.Pot no.1: Getting only afternoon/evening sun, 3 in a pot - short and skinny.

Pot no.2: Getting full sun, 3 in a pot - slightly taller and fatter.

Pot no. 3: Getting full sun, 1 in a pot - tallest and fattest among all.

Comparing Pot no.2 and no.3.

So the conclusion is, sunflowers need full sun and plenty of space to grow. Each sunflower needs a lot of nutrients from the soil, planting several together will just mean each plant will get less nutrients. I didn't follow the rules when planting them because i want them all in white pots and i haven't got time to paint the empty pots white yet - yeeee, is my white obsession getting serious?

Thank you Diana for the seeds!

Have a great week!! I am linking to Debbie's Newbie Linky Party! Head on over to her lovely blog to join in on all the fun!

I love that you have your seeds started already! We are having a big seed sowing event on Twitter.... stop by my blog so you can see what is being given away. I followed a post at Tootsie Time / Fertilize Friday to your page.

Happy Gardening and I hope to return to see how your sunflowers will grow!

I like your white pots. What kind of paint do you use?

Since I grow my evening sunflowers on the ground, they are several times bigger.

Bren: Thank you for the visit!
One: I use Dulux Gloss Finish, and sometimes Toa spray if i lack of time to paint by brush. Yep i think sunflowers are happier on the ground, more space for them to grow wild haha. When can i see yours? :))

Although the name is evening sun, they prefer morning sun;-). I have one now accidently growing in a hanging pot. I found growing them in pot will not be big as the one in ground or fewer and smaller bloom. But in white pots, the sunflower plant look very pretty:).I dream of the day I will see wild sunflower growing in my garden.

Who say gardening is simple.... We can even run test, play around with parameters, its like DISCOVERY CHANNEL!!... But sunflowers in my garden are just everage... I miss the six footer I used to grow in Putrajaya....

Diana: I love how they look in your compound all growing so tall and huge! I don't have any 'ground' for them in the garden except Roy's Residence but there is a no-no place for the flowers as Roy will kill them all :(

p3chandan & Bangchik:
Bukan experimen, betul betul takde tempat ma... Patut malu to show this post 'coz all of them don't grow as tall as yours haha.

Salute your experiment of '3 different pots under 3 different light and soil conditions'... and also, your conclusion too... my sunflowers grow too big in my potager, taking up a lot of space... so, no sunflowers for the moment...

I love sunflowers, too. I can't wait to start gardening this spring. And to start seeds in little pots that I can move outside when it's much, much warmer than it is now! Thanks for sharing.
